Dependent educational expenses

You generally cannot write off professional licensing fees for your dependents.

For dependent educational expenses, you can claim the American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) or the Lifetime Learning Credit (LLC) for tuition, fees, and course materials.

AOTC Requirements

  • Up to $2,500 per eligible student.
  • First four years of higher education.
  • Enrolled at least half-time.

LLC Requirements

  • Up to $2,000 per tax return.
  • Undergraduate, graduate, and professional courses.

For both credits your would normally receive a Form 1098-T from an eligible educational institution.
