D-40WH error payor have too many characters

This is an error on form D-40WH of your DC state return. To fix the problem, please see the following:

Payor Name-1 on the D-40WH comes from your first federal W-2 or 1099-MISC. The official DC form has only 13 spaces on the form (the TurboTax version as as many as 20).

Please

  • edit your first W-2 and
  • shorten the Employer's Name to less than 20 characters.

Do the Review again and see if the error goes away. If so, continue with the return.;

if the error persists, then either

  • shorten the name a few more characters,
  • or try the second W-2 (if one), just in case the order of the Payors in DC isn't the same order as the W-2s on the federal return.

Note that other users have reported success with names no longer than 20 characters.

Note that shortening the name of the employer on the W-2 won't be a problem, if you've made sure that the employer's EIN on the W-2 is correctly entered.
