Can I deduct my expenses for becoming licensed as a nurse?

This included fees paid to the Virginia Board of Nursing and to Pearson Vue to take the NCLEX-RN (licensure exam).

You can claim a deduction for the license fee that you paid to Virginia Board of Nursing, as an unreimbursed employee expense, if you have unreimbursed employee expenses that are in excess of 2% of your adjusted gross income AND you qualify to itemize your deductions. Please refer to pages 2-3 of Pub 529 under the headings, "deductions subject to the 2% limit" and "unreimbursed employee expenses". Also page 5 of Pub 529, under the heading, "licenses and regulatory fees".https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/p529.pdf

I dont believe that you will be able to take any type of deduction for the testing fees that you paid to Pearson.

To itemize your deductions, you would have to have personal expenses such as medical and dental expenses, mortgage interest, real estate taxes, unreimbursed job expenses and certain miscellaneous expenses, and charitable contributions that when combined together, total more than your standard deduction. For example if you file single, your standard deduction is $6300 so you would have to have personal expenses that total more than $6300.

Please refer to the following FAQs to learn more about the 2% rule and how to enter your licensing fee information in Turbo Tax.
