I'm the Treasurer for our summer swim team program and received a 1099-K for all the membership dues that were collected. The 1099-k was issued using the bank account EIN that was set up and used for collection purposes. We are not a not-for-profit business and all dues are used for the program. Since this is set up with the bank account EIN and not a business, how/where do I report this income with offsetting expenses so that we/I am not taxed.
You'll need to sign in or create an account to connect with an expert.
If you accepted the payments into your personal bank account and the 1099-K is in your ID number, you can enter the Form 1099-K in the designated section in TurboTax, check the box "This amount in box 1a is too high or includes some personal transactions" and enter the amount that shouldn't be included in the box that appears.
An alternative method is to report the full amount of the 1099-K in the 1099-K section, then enter the incorrect amounts as separate entries under Less Common Income, then Miscellaneous Income, then Other income not reported on a form. Report the incorrect items as negative numbers, and thereby deduct the incorrect income. That way, your income reported from a Form 1099-K will match what was reported to the IRS so that their matching system doesn't show a discrepancy.
Contact the issuer regarding any issues with your Form 1099-K.
If you set up an EIN for this activity, and the 1099-K is in that number, see the discussion in this thread for more information. You would not report the 1099-K on your personal return.
See this IRS FAQ for more information regarding Form 1099-K.
See this TurboTax article for more information on 1099-Ks received for other than self-employment income.
Thank you for the message. I have read through everything in the message as well, but I am still a little concerned for 2024. Since the 1099-K was sent using our bank account EIN and we aren't currently set up as a non-profit business, who would I file the 1099-K with if I do not include in my person return? If I include in my personal return, I can't find the option to include the EIN in the form, so it wouldn't even look like I am submitting anything for this 1099-K and I want to make sure I am getting this reported somehow.
