Question

My form 8949 shows duplicate lines which wrongly affect the amounts shown on Schedule D lines 1b and 8b. How do I correct this error?

If you imported your transactions, they may have imported twice.  Return to the 1099-B section, and if there are duplicate 1099-B's, delete one.  If there aren't duplicates, I recommend deleting the 1099-B and importing again.  If it imports duplicates again, you may need to delete and enter manually.

Your assumption is correct:  I imported data twice.  But simply deleting a duplicate basic 1099 didn't eliminate the duplicate entries on form 8949.  A customer service expert helped me through this successfully by deleting duplicates on capital gains forms 1099-B.
