Question

Is anyone else having a problem with turbotax online now asking to check (revise) what are valid entries from form 1099-R (Box 14a, when there is only a box 14) ?

When I ran the program a few weeks ago, it did not flag this as a problem, but now it does.  The amount I have in box 14 is correct.  The error message I get says 'Box14a For electronic filing, New York State withholdings can not be greater than or equal to gross distributions or state distributions'.  There is a box 14, but no 14A on my 1099-R and the amount there IS less than the gross distribution amount entered.

Box 14a For electronic filing, New York State withholdings can not be greater than or equal to gross distribution or state distribution.

I have spent too much time on this. I have gone over everything and the NYS tax directions.  Something is wrong. It is not a complicated  calculation to figure out the NYS tax. What is the answer?

If you have NYS tax withheld and reported in Box 14, enter the NYS distribution in Box 16, which should be the same as Box 1 amount.

This should resolve the issue.

I am having the same problem.  When will it be fixed?

If your question is related to a 1099-R giving an error because the state withholdings are greater than the state distribution, you can go back to the 1099-R.  On the screen to "Enter your 1099-R details from [custodian]", you can enter the Box 1 Gross distribution amount in Box 16-State distribution and that should clear this error.

I got around it by in putting my taxable amount on the 1099R into box 16,   You could use gross or taxable income and it works.

I am having this same issue as of 3/15/26 at 8:00 pm eastern time.  I am unable to continue to e-file my taxes.  Does anyone have an update?  Also, if I were to call Turbo Tax what is the phone number?  Thank you for any advice.

yes, gettting same thing.  Did not get this last week when I ran the checks.  I have 4 1099Rs and getting same message on all - when there does not seem to be any error on my forms.

Please clarify. Are you getting error messages that pertain to Box 14 of Forms 1099-R?

As @RogerD1 stated, if your question is related to a 1099-R giving an error because the state withholdings are greater than the state distribution, you can go back to the 1099-R.  On the screen to "Enter your 1099-R details from [custodian]", you can enter the Box 1 Gross distribution amount in Box 16-State distribution and that should clear this error.

Boxes 14, 15, and 16, the state section of the form, are related. TurboTax will determine there is an error if, for example, there is a dollar amount in Box 14 but no information in 15 or 16.

See this tax tips article for more information about Form 1099-R.

I live in a state with no income tax so the only right answer for this me would be a zero in this box.  I ended up working around this problem by entering the information for this 1099-R manually instead of importing my 1099-R file.
