Can I file a 1040 Schedule 1 separately from TurboTax?

I finally got all of my W-2s in and am submitting my taxes via TurboTax. Everything is fine except TurboTax wants to charge me $40 to file my taxes because I paid interest on my federal student loans. This information is supposedly provided on Form 1040: Schedule 1. If I were to remove my student loan interest payments from my TurboTax filing, could I mail-in a 1040: Schedule 1 separately to the IRS? Thank you.

No. The Schedule 1 must be included with your original tax return and you must upgrade to Deluxe to include it. You are not required to include the 1098-E at all but you can't send in another 1040 with the Schedule 1 at a later date. You would have to amend your return to add the interest and print, sign and mail the amended return form 1040X. Amended returns are free using TurboTax UNLESS you must upgrade to prepare the amended return which you would have to do if you file your original return with the Free Edition.

You may be eligible for another free product called the Free File Program. https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/2026912-how-do-i-switch-to-turbotax-free-file-program

You qualify if you had $34,000 or less AGI or $66,000 or less military family AGI or qualify for EITC. Click on See if you qualify then Yes (if you do) then Start Now button, then choose Create an Account.
