2018 Minnesota additional nontaxable income

Because of an error with our guidance in TurboTax, you may have overstated your additional nontaxable income and received a smaller refund than what was due on your 2018 Minnesota Individual Tax Return (Form M1) or your Minnesota Homestead Credit Refund (for Homeowners) and Renter’s Property Tax Refund return (Form M1PR).

If you didn’t file these forms, you do not need to read further or take any further steps.

If you filed these forms and had income from bonus depreciation addition or subtraction, car insurance settlement payments used to pay medical bills, child care assistance or dependent’s indemnity compensation, please continue reading to determine if you need to amend. If you didn’t have income from any of those sources, you don't need to read further or take any further steps.

You should amend your 2018 Form M1 if:

  • You paid education-related expenses in 2018 for a qualifying child in grades Kindergarten through 12 AND
  • Your tax return includes a Schedule M1ED, K-12 Education Credit AND

    • dependent’s indemnity compensation

If all of these apply, you should amend your 2018 Form M1 to determine if you are entitled to an additional refund.  Please follow the instructions below to amend your 2018 Form M1.
