It says both my state and federal taxes have been approved but I have only gotten my state back, why is that?

Your state and federal returns are processed by two separate government entitites. Your federal return is processed by the IRS. Your state return is processed by your state's Department of Revenue. One return does not impact the other. The most accurate place to check your status is the IRS's Where's My Refund? site.
