If I need to amend my taxes this year, and my return gets deposited before the amend is complete, do I not spend that money until my amend is complete?

You should not send an amended return until your original return has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  The Form 1040X you will need is not yet available anyhow...that will be in early March at best.

Depending on why you are amending, it would be wise to wait to spend that refund until you see what the results of amending are.  It is possible you could owe some of the refund back.

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 3-4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.  It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:

My son's father has to add our child,  he thought I was but it's his year so now he has to amend to add him.
