Why does it say I owe now after filing an amendment to change my filing status?

You are still receiving your original refund amount.

The tax calculator on Turbo Tax resets to zero when you start the amend process so the amounts showing up in the tax calculator after you start your amended return are new amounts to be received (for overpayment) or paid back to the IRS.

When you changed your filing status to Single, you lost the higher standard deduction, an exemption and your income is now taxed differently.  If you net the refund amount from your original e-file with the amount you owe on the amended return, the difference is what your tax refund/amount due would have been if you filed as Single originally.

What you do now will depend on whether your e-files are accepted or not.

If your e-file is rejected, you need to delete the amended return (see below), make sure the change to your filing status is entered correctly, correct the rejection error, and then e-file again.

If your e-file is accepted, you will need to amend your return.  You must wait until you have received your original refund amount.

Please click here for information on how to prepare an amended return. You can click on 2017 to receive the instructions on how to amend your return.

You will need to print and mail your amended return.  You can't e-file your amended return.

If you need to delete your Amended return:

  • Log back into your return
  • Click on Federal
  • Click on Other Tax Situations and
  • scroll down to Other Tax Forms
  • Click the button beside Amend a Return.  (See the screenshot below.)
  • Scroll down to the bottom of the screen.
  • You should see “Nevermind, I don’t need to amend.”
  • Click the cancel button.  (See the second screenshot below.)
