Can I write off $500 in tax accountant fees from 2016 tax returns?

Yes, you can if you itemize and your miscellaneous expenses exceed 2% of your adjusted gross income.

Additional information: Tax Preparation FeesSchedule A, Line 22
You can actually deduct the cost of tax preparation on your Schedule A. If you paid taxes and used a credit or debit card to do so, you can also deduct convenience fees. This deduction doesn’t apply if you used a
free online tax preparation software or service, but you can write off paid services, such as TurboTax. Just keep in mind this only applies to fees you paid in the year you’re deducting them. For instance, when filing taxes for 2017, you can only deduct fees paid in 2017 for your 2016 tax return.

To enter your miscellaneous expenses, such as tax preparation fees:

  • Type tax preparation fees and click search.
  • Click on Jump to tax preparation fees.
  • Continue with on onscreen questions.
