Since the 2018 Tax Extenders are still under review (specifically PMI), if you DON'T owe money, is it advisable to file an extension and wait? Or file an amendment?

It's really up to you, but I don't think anything will change for the 2018 tax season at this point.

I recommend filing your return and IF (big IF) the PMI deduction comes back you can amend your return to include the deduction.

Wyden and Grassley did introduce a tax extender bill which included PMI. It just keeps getting pushed out. <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://www.politico.com/newsletters/morning-tax/2019/03/28/boom-goes-extenders-417324">https://www....> . I guess my trepidation or question is more around how much of a pain is it to file an amendment since you can't do it online? :( Filing an extension seems so much easier 🙂

I do agree, it's easier to file an extension.  But amending isn't really hard, either.  You can prepare the amended return online, you just have to print and mail it in.  Check out this FAQ for instructions on amending your return.

It's your call.  If you're an optimist and don't need the money from the original refund, you've don't have to give up hope until October 15!  🙂
