It's not only because of the interest.  It's because you Itemize.  Even if you had no interest you need Deluxe to Itemize.

Everyone can "Start for Free".  But the Free Edition is suitable for only the simplest returns with no additional schedules.  Depending on your personal tax situation, TurboTax determines if you must upgrade to a paid edition.  Once you're required to use a paid edition, the state tax preparation program is no longer free.  See the TurboTax FAQ below for more explanation.
