Yes the amended return doesn't affect your first refund. You will still get the first refund and get to keep it. Then the amended return is only for the difference you get back or owe back. In fact you should not amend until the first return has fully processed and you get the first refund.

Amended return can only be mailed and will take 8-16 weeks or more to process and they only mail checks for refunds.
