Why is my 2018 refund more than the taxes paid?

My refund is way more than the taxes withheld.  I changed status from single to filing jointly, but in the past I have received only the amount that was withheld.

You might have qualified for a refundable credit. You can check Form 1040 line 17 if you received a refundable credit.
