Why is it that the IRS says I still owe them money when I have paid everything in on time

I made $37,859.69 and paid in 2,591.00 and the IRS says I still owe them money

The numbers alone don't tell the story. We don't know  if that is gross or AGI, about capital gain, health insurance, homebuyer, and so on. You will need to look at your tax return to see where the taxes are coming from.

Did you get a letter from the IRS saying you owe?  For what year?  Or is that the tax due on your return?
