Why do I have to wait 2 weeks to amend my federal return for 2020 with Form 1040X? IRS website says you can do it electronically now. ?

The availability of the software 1040X changed to March 18---less than a week from today.   I recommend waiting for it.   

The 1040X will not be available in the software until March 18  You are correct that the the paper form is on the IRS site.   You can print out that 1040X form if you want to use it—-and prepare your amended return by hand to mail in instead of waiting to use the software and e-file it.

You can expect it to take 4-6 months for the IRS to process your amended return.

My 2020 return is accepted and my refund received. I need to  amend it to include a regular IRA I missed.

When I install turbotax using my CD from Costco. It prompts me to get the latest updates before I get started.

Will form 1040X be in the update on March 18th? ??

Will there be a Prompt asking me if I want to Amend my return?

The CD/download updates when updates are available---so that should include the 1040X.   When you are ready to amend your return in the CD/download software you will go to   Other Tax Situations>Other Tax Forms>Amend a Return

The 1040X form is available on the IRS site, but not yet incorporated into TurboTax software.  When TurboTax is updated in late March, then the software will do the work of fillilng out the 1040-X as well as other forms that may change.

You generally must file an amended return within three years of the date you filed the original return or within two years after the date you paid the tax, whichever is later.
