Why are my 2021 taxes have not been processed, even though ins the Turbotx portal, it says the efiling has been accepted by federal?

I log in to my IRS account and I don't see the payment that I made for 2021 taxes, then I noticed it says my taxes have not yet been processed.

Why are my 2021 taxes have not been processed, even though ins the Turbotx portal, it says the efiling has been accepted by federal?

@gabiabisa "accepted" means the IRS acknoweldges receipt of the tax return.  it does not mean they have reviewed or approved it.  here is what the IRS website states:

How long you may have to wait: The IRS understands the importance of timely processing of tax returns and refund issuance. We have processed all error free returns received prior to January 2022 and continue to work the returns that need to be manually reviewed due to errors. We are continuing to reroute tax returns and taxpayer correspondence from locations that are behind to locations where more staff is available, and we are taking other actions to minimize any delays. Tax returns are opened and processed in the order received. As the return is processed, whether it was filed electronically or on paper, it may be delayed because it has a mistake including errors concerning the Recovery Rebate Credit and the Child Tax Credit, is missing information, or there is suspected identity theft or fraud. If we can fix it without contacting you, we will. If we need more information or need you to verify that it was you who sent the tax return, we will write you a letter. The resolution of these issues could take 90 to 120 days depending on how quickly and accurately you respond, and the ability of IRS staff trained and working under social distancing requirements to complete the processing of your return.

What you should do: In most instances, no further action is needed but you may check Where’s My Refund? or you can view your account. If you filed electronically and received an acknowledgement, you do not need to take any further action other than promptly responding to any requests for information. If you filed on paper, check Where’s My Refund? If it tells you we have received your return or are processing or reviewing it, we are processing your return, but it may be under review. If you filed before January 2022 and Where’s My Refund? does not have any information, your return has been opened but work on it has not begun. We’re working hard to get through the carryover inventory. Please don’t file a second tax return or contact the IRS about the status of your return.

The IRS website for the status of a federal tax refund cannot be used to check the status of a payment to the IRS - https://www.irs.gov/refunds

To check any payments to the IRS you have to sign onto your IRS Tax Account - https://www.irs.gov/payments/your-online-account

  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.

@gabiabisa

Didi you have a balance due on the return which you did pay ?    If so be aware that the IRS is woefully behind in processing returns and returns with refunds on them are processed first  so those with balance dues on them are put to the back of the line.  It could be months and months before the IRS transcripts show them as processed.

@gabiabisa - how did you make the payment?

if it was an electronic payment, that is a problem because it should have been debited from your bank account already.  you may want to figure out what happened and resolve.

if it was a check inside the envelope you mailed, the IRS should have opened the envelope for the sole purpose of grabbing the check; if they missed it, they will probably find it when they process the paper file you submitted.  I'd be less concerned if you sent a check with the paperwork.

There are 2 addresses to mail in a return for where you live ... one if you are getting a refund and one where a payment is sent.  The address where payments are sent where all envelopes opened immediately to take the payment  out but the returns are ignored until they get entered into the system and processed.  If you mailed it to the address for no payment included then the envelope may still be in a bin unopened ... eventually they will open it and find the payment.

The IRS doesn't answer the phone. But thanks for the tip.

I have a balance due, and I took the payment plan. When I log in to my Federal IRS account online it says it hasn't been processed so I don't want to pay and not have it posted against my dues. What do you suggest?

@gabiabisa suggest making the payment if you have taxes due.  Once the tax return is processed the payments will post against the tax return effective the date you made the payment, so it will all work itself out.
