Federal and state refunds come from completely separate entities,  There is no rule as to which one will come first or how much time there will be between their arrivals.  Some states process returns quickly and some are very slow.

In addition to the information @xmasbaby0 provided, the Hawaii Department of Taxation has its own Where's My Refund webpage where you can track the status of your Hawaii state tax refund.

They recommend waiting to check until:

• 7-8 weeks after you e-file your tax return.
• 9-10 weeks after you mail your tax return.
• Add additional 2 weeks for paper refund checks.
