The date has been moved back. The Form 1040X Amended Return is now supposed to become available March 4. But since the update usually occurs overnight Wednesday into the wee hours of Thursday AM, it may actually be March 5. Rarely, a form can be released earlier than shown in the table. No one can know for sure--only an expected date. It's been moved back a couple of times already.
TurboTax Form Availability Tool
In the meantime, do not make any changes in your original return. Also, if you are due a Federal refund, it's recommended to wait on the refund to arrive before amending. Or if you owed taxes due, to wait until the return processes.
It looks like the Form 1040X Amended Return became available today Feb. 27 according to the Forms Availability table. IF it's correct.
The Form 1040-X is now available to file. Use the link below to check to see when it will be available. Do not change your tax return until you read all the instructions. TurboTax needs to know the original numbers and the corrected numbers to provide the correct end results before you prepare it.
If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.
Amend a tax return for the current tax year
After receiving a notification that support for the 2025 Amended Return was available, I logged in TurboTax desktop and amended my return (I had to add a 1099-MISC) that I received after filing my 2025 Taxes. Everything went smoothly including the e-filing portion of it. 10mn later, I got a notification that my Federal Amended Return was REJECTED with pretty much no explanation, while my State Amended Return was pending. I called Intuit Support immediately and learned from a CS Rep that I waited almost 30mn to talk to that my Amended Return was rejected because it cannot be processed by the IRS until March 6!!! This doesn't make any sense! Why would Intuit release a software that allows you to amend a return but can't be processed by the IRS until later? Couldn't they wait until the WHOLE PROCESS was supported instead of allowing you to file an amended return that goes nowhere? Oh and one more thing: 1hr later, I received a new notification that my Amended State return was .................. ACCEPTED!!! This is absolutely ridiculous! I thought that a State Tax return couldn't be accepted if its Federal counterpart was rejected. Apparently, it's not the case. Bottom line, I have no idea how and when this will be corrected and what I am supposed to do. Thanks Intuit and TurboTax for creating this mess!
The IRS will start accepting amended returns on March 4th.
If you need to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should adhere to these guidelines:
You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever date is later) to file an amendment.
Why is the Amended State return accepted but not the Federal one? This doesn't make any sense.
The IRS should be accepting amended Forms 1040X for 2025 around March 4, 2026. If your federal return was not accepted, you should wait until that date to see if that status changes, but in general, Form 1040-X (amended return) will show the status as "received," or "completed," or "adjusted" if a change is made. This status usually starts showing up about 3 weeks after filing your Form 1040X.
You will receive a confirmation email from TurboTax (usually within 24–48 hours) when the status updates to "Accepted" in your TurboTax account. This means that the IRS has received your Form 1040X. It is a little different than a regular tax return that shows accepted when the IRS accepts your return.
You can use the IRS "Where's my Amended Return" tool to check on your amended returns status however as stated above, it takes about 3 to 4 weeks to show up on this system. Amended returns can take 8–16 weeks to process.
If you just filed your Form 1040X, there may also be delays due to high volume of returns, processing delays or incorrect SSN or tax year or filing status. Make sure these are correct on your amended return.
