When I filed my taxes in Feb., TurboTax said there was a normal deduction that still hadn't been decided whether it would exist for 2018. Anyone know the status of that?

Unfortunately, it looks like there isn't any way for me to go back into TurboTax and see the name or status of that potential deduction, which is seriously poor planning on TurboTax's part.

I've already filed, but I would amend if it turned out I could get a bigger refund, and there's no way for me to find out as far as I can tell.

The primary deductions or credits for individuals that expired at the end of 2017 and were not extended for 2018 are the following.

  • Tuition and fees deduction
  • Mortgage insurance premiums deductible as mortgage interest
  • Exclusion of canceled debt on principal residence
  • Nonbusiness energy property credit
However, Congress has not extended any deductions or credits that were not already in effect for 2018. Any deduction that was unavailable in February is still not available.
