When I filed my taxes, I didn't include the deduction for child care cost. When am I able to file an amend and will it hold up my income tax return process?

Yes, you would file an amended to return to make any corrections on a return that is already filed. You should wait until the IRS has processed your current return that you have e-filed. How will you know this? If you are due a refund, you'll know it when the IRS sends you your refund check. Otherwise, wait about three weeks after your return is accepted by the IRS.

The amendment process is independent of the initial filing process. You should wait a little while (as noted above) to mail the amended return because you don't want it colliding with your initial return and confusing the IRS.

Note that amended returns take longer - the wait time for your additional refund (if any) can be 8+ weeks.

Some additional notes. You can check your e-file status on your original return by going to https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3319882

If your return is rejected for any reason, this means that your original e-filed return was not accepted by the IRS. In this case, you don’t file an amended return, but instead go back into TurboTax, fix the problem, and e-file the return again. This link may help you fix the return - https://ttlc.intuit.com/replies/3302275

Note that if your return is accepted by the IRS and you need to amend the return, that form 1040X (the form used to file an amended return) is not quite ready yet at TurboTax; it is expected to be available in early February – see <a rel="nofollow" target="_blank" href="https://ttlc.intuit.com/questions/1908854-irs-forms-availability-table-for-turbotax-individual-perso...>

Note that any amended return (1040A) must be printed and mailed.

Thank you very much! This was very helpful and relieving!
