When doin your child's taxes should i use any of my information when doin so
UPDATED FOR TAX YEAR 2019
Use the child's own information (SSN and income) on the return.
A dependent child must file their own tax return if:
- Their earned income (from a job) is $12,200 or more;
- Their unearned income (from interest, etc.) is $1,100 or more; or
- They had net earnings from self-employment of at least $400.
If your child can no longer be considered your dependent, they must file their own return if they earn $12,200 or more, which is the 2019 standard deduction for a single taxpayer.
IMPORTANT: Be SURE to mark on the child's return that they are being claimed as a dependent on someone else's return.
To check this on the child's return, please follow these steps:
- Click on the My Info tab in the black bar on the side.
- Click on Edit (pencil icon) next to child's name (as taxpayer).
- On the screen, Your personal info, section #3, mark the box that Someone else can claim me on their tax return. (Screenshot #2)
- Then mark whether the parent(s) will or will not claim the child on their 2019 return.
- Continue with the rest of the return.
