If you are amending both your state and federal tax returns, as is usually required, when you print copies for filing, you will probably have the following:

  1. Form 1040X;
  2. All federal forms and schedules changed by the amendment process;
  3. Your state amendment form;
  4. All state forms and schedules changed by the amendment process;
  5. A second copy of all federal forms and schedules changed by the amendment process.

Depending on your printer, these may all be in reverse order.

I find it best to create two stacks: Federal and State. Keep all forms and schedules in their original order.

Place a complete set of federal forms and schedules on the bottom of both stacks.

Place a complete set of state forms and schedules atop one stack.

Place the state amendment form atop the state forms stack.

Place the Form 1040X atop the federal forms only stack.

Clip all the pages in each stack together, sign and date, and mail. Print a second complete copy for your records.
