What kind of documentation do I need to deduct my essential oils and supplements recommended by a physician for a specific illness?
Does my doctor need to write a prescription or is verbal recommendation and approval sufficient?

Yes, it's best if you have written evidence to support your doctor's orders for nutritional supplements. This is true for any tax deduction on your return.
According to IRS Pub 502: "You can't include in medical expenses the cost of nutritional supplements, vitamins, herbal supplements, “natural medicines,” etc. unless they are recommended by a medical practitioner as treatment for a specific medical condition diagnosed by a physician. These items are taken to maintain your ordinary good health and aren't for medical care."
