What is the cost of amending my return?

What year do you need to amend?   There's no fee to amend the 2015 return if you prepared the original return with TurboTax. 

If your efiled return is rejected, you can simply make the changes and resubmit.

If your efiled return is accepted, however, then you can formally amend the return by preparing a Form 1040X, Amended Return.  But the form and instructions are not yet final in TurboTax.

You should wait on any Federal refund to arrive first before amending.

An amended return cannot be efiled.  It has to be printed and mailed, and takes the IRS up to 16 weeks to process.

The Form 1040X will not be ready for printing in TurboTax until 2/11/2016.

In the meantime, do not make any changes in your return without going through the proper amend steps.  When you start an amended return, it has to start off exactly as originally filed.

You may also have to amend your State return.

This is not true.  I received a late 1099B for a stock sale (I forgot) which resulted in a capital loss.  Because I originally filed standard deduction, short form 1040 via TurboTax, they want to charge me $69.99 to upgrade to the Premier version in order to file the amended return.  Sorry, I will take my chances with the IRS!

Your situation is different.  This is a thread from 3 years ago, and the threadowner was amending a 2015 return in February of 2016, and did not mention an upgrade.  Upgrades to a higher level product always have a fee, whether before or after filing.  But the amendment software is free for the same product level.

If you don't wish to upgrade,  another option is to prepare the amended return by hand, if you wish.  You can get the forms and instructions at the IRS website.

ADDENDUM:  If you amend the Federal return,  you may need to amend the state return as well.
