What is "Schedule 3, Nonrefundable Credits"? TurboTax says that I have to upgrade. Is there anyway to know exactly what on my return caused this?

Schedule 3 is a new form this year that may be needed along with your Form 1040.  It is used to report "non-refundable credits" such as the:

  • Foreign Tax Credit
  • Credit for Child and Dependent Care Expenses
  • Education credits
  • Retirement Savings Contributions Credit
  • Residential Energy Credit

You can click this IRS link to view Schedule 3: https://www.irs.gov/pub/irs-pdf/f1040s3.pdf.

We are not able to see your return on this forum, but my best guess is that the credit requiring you to file Schedule 3 is the Retirement Savings Contributions Credit.  Please click the link to this TurboTax FAQ for more information: What is the Savers Credit?
