We are not getting a refund and our taxable income is $0. Do we even need to file a federal return?

If you did not receive any income of any kind then there is no need or reason to file a tax return.  The IRS will not process a tax return with no income entered.

If you do have some income and it is not taxable then you will have to print and mail the tax return.  A tax return with no taxable income entered cannot be e-filed.
