TurboTax 2022 software never asked/included capital gains/losses (box 7 empty). What of Schedule D and Form 8949? Amend the return? DIV/INT were processed just fine.

Did not catch this until after payment/submission to IRS and actual 1040SR return became available for review.

You will need to amend your return in order to include the capital gains/ losses that were omitted from your return that has already been e-filed. Before you can file an amended return, the original return will need to have been processed by the IRS (refund issued / payment processed). Also, Form 1040-X for filing an amendment won't be available in TurboTax until February 23, 2023. See here for more information on forms availability.

See here for more information on preparing an amended return with TurboTax.

Once you have followed the steps to begin an amended return, return to Wages & Income. Scroll down to Investments and Savings, and select the appropriate line item to enter the type of capital gain/ loss transactions that you have.

There are times when you should amend your return and times when you shouldn't. Here are some common situations that call for an amendment:

  • You realized you missed out on claiming a tax deduction or credit.
  • You accidentally claimed the wrong tax filing status.
  • You need to add or remove a dependent.
  • You forgot to claim taxable income on your tax return.
  • You realize you claimed an expense, deduction, or credit that you weren't eligible to claim.
