The details include estimated taxes for 2026. Take a look at that section of your return and you can see if you should consider estimated payments. As you step through the screens answer any questions and you can choose not to print the vouchers if you don't need or want them. Follow the steps in the link below.
Once completed review your federal return again and the message should be gone. Please update here if you need further assistance and we will help.
When I login to the TurboTax online/website, I only have Documents. From there, I can print forms from the PDF. I don't see the 1040-ES section at all. Can I use the app after I've already filed? Is that where I'd be able to see the section?
Thanks.
I thought I added a follow-up.
No, this did not work. I don't have access to the 1040-ES section. I used the website/online version. Can I access it on the app?
Yes, you see that section before you file, however you can use the actual Form 1040-ES which guides easily using your 1040 for 2025. You can also use the following guidelines to make estimated tax payments that will eliminate penalty.
The IRS is a pay as you go system which means when the money is earned the tax is due.
Generally, you can avoid the penalty if your total timely estimated payments and withholdings are greater than or equal to the lesser of:
You can also avoid the penalty if the amount you owe is less than $1,000 as long as any estimated tax payments you made are timely.
Note: High-income taxpayers. If your adjusted gross income (line 11 of your 2025 Form 1040) is greater than $150,000 (or $75,000 if you're married and file a separate return from your spouse), you can avoid a penalty by paying at least 110% of your total tax from the prior year.
I am having the same problem, and the solution - the entire situation - is unacceptable. I came to TurboTax to help me do my taxes. Not get pointers to a do-it-yourself at the IRS.
That's the help my expert was able to offer.
Please, is there a calculator at least that can ingest Quickbooks and spit out a 1040-ES based on those current figures? I also need help figuring state.
This is my first time at all of this, so I apologize if this is much simpler than it seems to me. Today it seems an impenetrable forest. Thank you.
TurboTax provides several tax calculators that may help you estimate your taxes for next year. Check them out here: TurboTax Tax Calculators.
If you prepared your return using TurboTax, the software will include the calculations of estimated taxes due next year. However, if you don't owe taxes this year, you may not see Forms 1040-ES as part of your return.
If you have already e-filed from TurboTax Online, you will need to follow the steps below to access the estimated tax section. Note that you are NOT actually changing your return - you are simply opening your return again so you have access to your entries.
If you filed from TurboTax Desktop, open your return file and save as a new name (in case you change something). Then go to Other Tax Situations >> Form W-4 and Estimated Taxes.
TurboTax Desktop also includes a "What If" worksheet that you can access using Forms Mode. Use the "Open Form" icon above Forms in My Return and search for "What-If."
Thank you for the quick reply @PatriciaV. Here's what I find at your TurboTax Tax Calculators link for self-employment tax:
Pertains to 2025 taxes, referencing 2024 returns.
Also pertains to 2025 taxes. I don't need a forecast my 2025 refund - I have it 🙂
With respect to your instructions, we're fine until we get to this part:
I don't have anything that says "Your tax returns & documents". I do have "Past tax returns & docs."
Clicking there, I get to "Download/print return (PDF)", which doesn't contain the 1040-ES vouchers.
I also have access to "Amend (change) return". If I click the blue "Start an amendment online" button I get "Our experts are ready to help" across the top, and I can click a blue button to Set up a call. Alternatively, I can click "this article" which eventually tells me to file a 1040-X.
Nothing allows me to re-open my return.
I did "Set up a call" earlier today, which is where the expert gave me the same tips, then put me on hold until we disconnected somehow.
What can we do here, in time to avoid penalties?
