You can enter a 1099-DIV in TurboTax without a state listed in the form. To enter this in TurboTax Online:

  1. Go to the Did you have investment income? screen under Wages & Income and select Yes.
    • Select +Add investments if you arrive at one of these screens:
      • Let’s finish pulling in your investment income
      • Your investments & savings
      • Here's your 1099-DIV info
  2. On the Let's import your tax info screen, you have a choice for how to enter your 1099-DIV:
    • To import your form:
      • Select your bank or brokerage from the list.
      • Enter your sign-in info for your online account.
      • Select Get my form.
    • Select Enter a different way, then on the How do you want to add your investment docs? screen, you can either upload, snap a photo, or select Type it in myself to manually enter the info.
  3. Follow the on-screen instructions to enter the info from your 1099-DIV.
  4. When you reach the screen Let’s finish pulling in your investment income screen, any forms that have been entered are listed.
    • If you need to enter another 1099-DIV, select +Add Investments, which takes you to the Let's import your tax info screen.

Note: Don't combine the amounts from two or more 1099-DIV forms if they're from the same payer—enter each form separately.

Referring to what???

IF referring to what state the tax-exempt $$ in box 12 from Municipal Bond funds  or Muni ETFs you own ...then you select the first Bullet point and usually just "Multiple States' ( that  selection is at the very end of the drop-down list of states)._

____________________________________

If you live in an income taxing state...and you state is not CA, MN, or IL....then you are allowed to (But Not required to) select the second Bullet point and break out the $$ from your state's bonds, from all the others.

BUT...you must calculate these $$$ amounts your self from some extra material the Bond Funds publish elsewhere.   IF you end up doing this state breakdown, the first Bullet point must still be set at "Multiple States" before you select the second bullet point to do the breakdown.  Otherwise you just set Multiple States in the First bullet point and you hit "Continue" to move on.
