The second half of my child tax credit did not appear on my return do I need to amend it, or will it appear later?

Is the second half supposed to appear on your return if so, it did not for me.

Federal>Deductions and Credits>You and Your Family>Child Tax Credit

The IRS is sending out letter 6419 to you.  It will show the amount of advance child tax credit that you received during 2021.  Enter the information from that letter carefully.

The remaining amount of CTC that you can receive will show up on line 28 of your 2021 Form 1040.   Then it will calculate down to the refund you see on line 35a or the tax due on line 37.

PREVIEW 1040

Click on Tax Tools on the left side of the screen. Click on Tools. Click on View Tax Summary. Click on Preview my 1040 on the left side of the screen.

NOTE:   The CTC is indeed a “credit” that can be applied toward any tax liability that you would otherwise have to pay as “tax due”  to the IRS.

Please check line 28 of Form 1040 for your remaining Child Tax Care Credit amount.

Please be aware that your Child Tax Credit will be reduced if your modified adjusted gross income (AGI) is more than,

  • $150,000 if you're Married Filing Jointly or a Qualifying Widow
  • $112,500 if you're filing as Head of Household, or
  • $75,000 if you're Married Filing Separately or Single

Please see What is the Child Tax Credit? and IRS 2021 Child Tax Credit and Advance Child Tax Credit Payments FAQ for additional information.

If you believe you are eligible to claim the credit but don't see it on your return then you will have to amend your return after the original refund has been processed.  Please see How to amend a tax return for instructions (this will be updated once the 2021 Form 1040-X is ready).
