If you filed a 2016 tax return on Monday, then you had to print and mail the tax return. If you used TurboTax then you would have needed to use one of the 2016 desktop editions installed on your computer to complete the 2016 tax return. Or if you completed the 2016 tax return using the online editions prior to October 16 then you just downloaded the PDF and printed the return for mailing.
You need to wait at least 4 weeks after mailing the 2016 tax return before checking the IRS website for the status of a tax refund on the IRS website - https://www.irs.gov/refunds
However, there is a good possibility that the IRS will not have the status of a 2016 tax refund available on their website since they will be accepting 2017 tax returns in January. Then you will need to contact the IRS by phone to check the status of the refund.
After 4 weeks -
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don’t enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Then press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
It should then transfer you to an agent.

That makes sense. But TURBOTAX knows it's for my 2016 return.
There's a disconnect somewhere!
TT charged me, but never provided any support that this was a problem.
