What do you mean by "three mortgages behind?" Do you mean you missed three monthly mortgage payments in 2023? Did you itemize deductions on your 2023 return and include interest as shown on a 1098 that the lender sent to you? Did you enter enough itemized deductions to exceed your standard deduction? What was on line 12 of your original Form 1040?
I am currently 3 payments behind and need my refund to get caught up. I was told 20 weeks and was expecting it to come in July. Turbo Tax helped me fill out everything correctly. My itemized deductions exceed my standard deduction by more than double because of interest and property tax. It seems my file got in the wrong hands and has slipped into a crack; they are literally doing nothing and the late fees and fines are building up; I could lose my home :(
TurboTax gets no information from the IRS after you file your tax return. Contact the IRS.
Call the IRS: 1-800-829-1040 hours 7 AM - 7 PM local time Monday-Friday
When calling the IRS do NOT choose the first option re: "Refund", or it will send you to an automated phone line.
So after first choosing your language, then do NOT choose Option 1 (refund info). Choose option 2 for "personal income tax" instead.
Then press 1 for "form, tax history, or payment".
Then press 3 "for all other questions."
Then press 2 "for all other questions."
- When it asks you to enter your SSN or EIN to access your account information, don't enter anything.
- After it asks twice, you will get another menu.
Press 2 for personal or individual tax questions.
Then press 3 for all other inquiries
It should then transfer you to an agent.
And....are you sure you understand how itemized deductions affect your refund or tax due? Do you understand the caps that are put on some of those deductions---particularly the $10,000 cap on property tax?
Are you making the common mistake of just adding up all the amounts for your itemized deductions without considering the caps and thresholds that must be met?
STANDARD DEDUCTION
Many taxpayers are surprised because their itemized deductions are not having the same effect as they did on past tax returns. The new higher standard deduction and the elimination of certain deductions, as well as the cap on state and local taxes have had a major impact since the new tax laws went into effect beginning with 2018 returns.
Your itemized deductions have to be more than your standard deduction before you will see a change in your tax owed or tax refund. The deductions you enter do not necessarily count “dollar for dollar;” many of them are subject to meeting tough thresholds—medical expenses, for example, must meet a threshold that is pretty hard to reach. (Only the amount that is MORE than 7.5% of your AGI counts) The software program uses all the IRS rules that apply to the expenses you enter, and it tells you if you have enough to use your itemized deductions or if using the standard deduction is more advantageous for you. Under the new tax laws, some deductions have been capped—there is a $10,000 limit to the itemized deductions for state, local, property and sales taxes.
Your standard deduction lowers your taxable income. The standard deduction makes some of your income “tax free.” It is not a refund. You will see your standard or itemized deduction amount on line 12 of your 2023 Form 1040.
2023 STANDARD DEDUCTION AMOUNTS
SINGLE $13,850 (65 or older/legally blind + $1850)
MARRIED FILING SEPARATELY $13,850 (65 or older/legally blind + $1500)
MARRIED FILING JOINTLY $27,700 (65+/legally blind) ) + $1500 per spouse
HEAD OF HOUSEHOLD $20,800 (65 or older/blind) + $1850)
Thank you so much!! I am absolutely positive it was filed correctly. I have called them twice and was told each time it would be another 4 weeks, but I will try your instructions and see if that helps. Thanks again 😊
If IRS delays cause financial hardship, apply to the TaxPayer Advocate Service for assistance.
You can still expect more delay, so contact your mortgage holder for relief.
