The American Opportunity Credit is worth $10 in my refund, but $60 for an upgrade to get it? How can I just cut this from my return? I don't want to hold up my refund.

Since you can only get the AOC for 4 years you should not use it for such a low sum.

Enter "letme" in the Tools -> Search topics box to change the credit to the lifetime learning credit.

Thank you for your help.  Unfortunately, The Lifetime Learning Credit and Tuition and Fees Deductions are not available for me.  This leaves only the default option of the American Opportunity Credit and the software states that I must select one.

That does not seem possible (that you are eligible for American Opportunity Tax Credit (AOTC) and not the other credit nor deduction) since the requirements are stricter for the AOTC.

Type   letme   into the search-box then click the "Jump to letme" link to see the credits you are eligible for. You can select a different one if you desire.

If the upcharge is more than the credit, you don't have to take the credit. Additionally, you might be able to file with the credit for free on the IRS FreeFile, however your tax file would then not be saved to your TurboTax account.

To eliminate the credit in TurboTax, delete the 1098-T which would be under Deductions & Credits, Scroll down to Education.
