Question

Social Security Paymts reported incorrectly

  • I answered the question correctly, selecting 'no', that I did not reside in a different country. My tax return was submitted with no errors, but that same question was blank when I checked it yesterday in amend mode (with assistance from aTorboTax rep). How could that happen?

I know I did not skip that question and there was no error message that it was skipped.

There are some sections of the interview that will reset when you go back to review the answers.  Since you started with the amend process, this may have been what happened. This is done to ensure you do review each prompt so your amended return is prepared accurately.  If your situation had changed, you would need to be able to select the box, if applicable, based upon your specific situation.

Why are you asking?  Did  you get a letter from the IRS saying you didn't report the SS right and reduced your refund or a bill for tax due?

On your original return did you have an amount on 1040 line 6b for any taxable amount of Social Security?  Check your 2024 return.  If you had a taxable amount on line 6b and 2025 line 6b is 0 the IRS might adjust your return.
