After you prepare your tax return in TurboTax, and you chose to e-file it, then the tax return is submitted electronically to the IRS. When your tax return is accepted by the IRS, then at this point, the IRS has all control over the tax return. If your are due a refund and your account is closed, then the IRS will send you a paper check in the mail to the address on file.Whenever this happens the IRS usually sends a notice to you.  For more info about the notice, please see this IRS page: https://www.irs.gov/individuals/understanding-your-cp53a-notice

To track your federal refund:

  1. First, check your e-file status to see if your refund was accepted by the IRS. To check your e-file status, visit this link:https://turbotax.intuit.com/tax-tools/efile-status-lookup/
  2. If it has been accepted, then you would wait for the approval from the IRS. The refund process can take approximately 21 days. After acceptance, you can begin tracking your refund at: https://sa.www4.irs.gov/irfof/lang/en/irfofgetstatus.jsp
