Did you use a Form 1040X to amend after your first return had been fully processed?
Do not expect quick results from amending. It can take four months or more for the IRS to process an amended return.
You can watch for information here:
https://www.irs.gov/Filing/Individuals/Amended-Returns-(Form-1040-X)/Wheres-My-Amended-Return-1
When amending your return, you should wait until your original return has been accepted and approved and you have received your refund. This will help remove any delays from the IRS when processing the amended return. Once you amend, the counter will reset to $0, and when you enter the corrections, if any additional refund is due, it will be indicated on the counter. When you file your amended return, when it is accepted, and you are set to receive a refund, an additional refund will be issued.
If you want to make changes or add a document to a tax return that has already been filed and accepted by the taxing agency, you should follow these guidelines.
