TurboTax does not allow you to upload a PDF to your return. If you do not have a 1095-A from healthcare.gov, you will need to paper file your return.

After you complete entry of the Form 1095-A the TurboTax program will automatically complete the Form 8962 Premium Tax Credit.

To enter your Form 1095-A -

  • Click on Federal Taxes (Personal using Home and Business)
  • Click on Deductions and Credits
  • Click on I'll choose what I work on (if shown)
  • Scroll down to Medical
  • On Affordable Care Act (Form 1095-A), click the start or update button

Or enter 1095-a in the Search box located in the upper right of the program screen. Click on Jump to 1095-a

TurboTax will complete form 8962 when you enter the information for your 1095-A.  To enter the 1095-A in TurboTax follow these steps:

  1. Click Deductions & Credits
  2. Click show more under medical
  3. Click Start next to Affordable Care Act

The 1095-A is used to determine if the premium tax credit was calculated correctly when you signed up the Marketplace.  Taxpayers who are eligible for the Premium Tax Credit have a choice in how they receive it. You generally make the choice at the time you buy coverage in the Marketplace. The options are:

  • Use the credit to reduce your taxes when you file your return at tax time.
  • Use the credit to reduce your insurance premiums in advance when you pay the insurance premiums.

The first option is straightforward: At tax-filing time, you figure out the amount of your credit and then subtract that amount from your tax liability.

The second option is more complicated, because the government gives you the credit in advance—by sending money to your insurer to reduce your premiums. In this case, you figure the amount of your credit and compare it to the amount paid to your insurer to reduce your premiums.
