The program is correct ... he got the advance based of the filed 2020 return and you ALSO get the credit based off the 2021 return. This is quirk in the tax law ... a rare LEGAL double dip.
Actually there is a loophole that allows you to get it. People received those 3rd EIP payments based on 2020 returns because the IRS was pushed to pay the stimulus checks out in a hurry. But they were really an advance on a credit you get on a 2021 return. Uncle does not have to pay it back, but if you can claim him as a dependent on your 2021 return, you do get it. Good news for you.
Strange as it may seem, if you truly are eligible to claim him because you provided more than half of his support and he had less than $4,300 of taxable income, you can receive that stimulus even though he got it last year.
