Received paper check in mail 3/29/2021 for 2019 tax refund not due. The dollar amount exceeds my tax liability for 2019. What should I do please?

The IRS confirmed the check is real. The math does not match my records. In 2019, I owed and I paid my taxes in a timely manner. Please tell me what to do?

Is it definitely for a refund or could it be for a stimulus? only the IRS would be able to confirm details surrounding any checks that they have sent to you.

if it's a correction of your 2019 return you will receive a letter from the IRS in 2-3 weeks explaining the changes made. for a stimulus payment, you should get a different notice explaining what you got was a stimulus payment.
