Well you can PRAY the return gets rejected so you can correct the error and re-transmit the return.

BUT... if the return is accepted for processing ....

If your bank rejects the direct deposit, the IRS will send you a paper check automatically.  They'll send it to the address on your tax return.

It's an inconvenience, as you'll have to wait a bit longer, but you'll still get your refund.  Here's a link to the IRS web page discussing these circumstances:  https://www.irs.gov/help-resources/tools-faqs/faqs-for-individuals/frequently-asked-tax-questions-an...

Your e-filed tax return will be Pending until the IRS starts pulling tax returns on and after January 27.  If you are lucky the IRS will reject your tax return and then you can enter the correct bank information.

So if the IRS accepts the tax return -

If you are due a tax refund and the bank information is incorrect, the IRS will attempt to deposit the refund and the deposit will be rejected.  The IRS will then mail you a refund check to the address entered on your tax return.

If you have taxes owed and the bank information is incorrect, the IRS will be sending you a letter in the mail to the address on your tax return, requesting payment of the taxes owed.

Or you can go to the following IRS website for how to cancel your payment and then pay the taxes owed using the IRS payment website.

  • Once your return is accepted, information pertaining to your payment, such as account information, payment date, or amount, cannot be changed. If changes are needed, the only option is to cancel the payment and choose another payment method.
  • Call IRS e-file Payment Services 24/7 at 1-888-353-4537 to inquire about or cancel your payment, but please wait 7 to 10 days after your return was accepted before calling.
  • Cancellation requests must be received no later than 11:59 p.m. ET two business days prior to the scheduled payment date.
