Spouse passed away last year - IRS rejected return because SSN locked for deceased individual?

Spouse passed away.  Put this in Turbo Tax.  Turbo tax generated 1040-SR for federal return.  I don't see an indicator on the return to show spouse passed away.

IRS rejected return.

IND-941-01 - The Spouse SSN in the return has been locked because Social Security Administration records indicate the number belongs to a deceased individual.

How do I file?

Very sorry for your loss.  For the year that your spouse died, you can still file a joint return.  That way, you will get the married filing jointly standard deduction of $24,800 (+ $1300 for each spouse 65 or older) which will lower the amount of income you are taxed on.

In My Info, you will need to indicate that your spouse died. When his name is in My Info,  there is a screen early in the interview that asks "Do any of these apply to [name] ?’” where you will do that, and then a drop down will appear where you can enter the date he passed.

If you have dependent children still living at home, you will be able to file as a qualified widow for the next two years after this tax return.  Post back if you need further help.

Since the SSN has already been locked you will need to file your return by mail.   Print, sign and date it and mail it in.

When you mail a tax return, you need to attach any documents showing tax withheld, such as your W-2’s or any 1099’s.  Use a mailing service that will track it, such as UPS or certified mail so you will know the IRS/state received the return.

Federal and state returns must be in separate envelopes and they are mailed to different addresses.  Read the mailing instructions that print with your tax return carefully so you mail them to the right addresses.

I did indicate he passed away and entered the date of his passing.  Turbo tax created a 1040-SR (I am retired).

It "printed" he passed away at the top of the  form when I printed it but appear to not helped with E-Filing.

Sorry---you have to mail your return.   E-filing rejections come from the IRS.   It seems the IRS has locked the SSN and will not allow you to e-file.
