Is my refund that I received back an actual refund from the IRS or if it was my stimulus payment in lieu of a refund?

No one here can see your tax return so we do not know what you received.    If you had an amount on line 30 of your Form 1040 then that was the recovery rebate credit----the stimulus money you had not yet received ( for EIP #1 or EIP #2)     on line 30 was either added to your refund or could have been used to pay toward tax you owed.
