I failed to open my tax return of 2021.

The .tax2021  file must be on your hard drive ... the program will not recognise or open any files saved in the cloud or on any other removable storage medium.

The file name of the tax return file has to be .tax2021

What are you trying to open it with? You can only open a .tax2021 file with the TurboTax CD/Download software for 2021. If the file includes a state tax return, the state must be installed in the TurboTax software before you can open the file. Start the TurboTax program first, then open the file from within TurboTax. Don't try to open it by clicking on the file in Windows.

You can't open the file in iCloud, only after it is copied to your hard drive.  

If your icloud backup added "iCloud" as an extension, delete it.  The file needs to be named JJ-2021.tax2021.  It can't start with a dot, and it must end with .tax2021.  

Also, in Mac land, files that start with a dot are usually temporary or scratch files created while you are working on the file and should be deleted by the system when you close the file, but are not always deleted.  If you have a file named ".JJ-2021.tax.2021.icloud" that's probably the temp file, what you really want is the parent file named "JJ-2021.tax2021".  

Once you have the correct file, there are only two things you can do with it.  You can open it in Turbotax 2021 and edit it, or you can use it to start a new 2022 tax return by importing certain data.  If you have both Turbotax 2021 and Turbotax 2022 installed on your computer, double-clicking the file will probably try to open the 2022 program to import your data.  If you want to open the file in the 2021 program to work on it, you likely need to first launch the 2021 program from the Applications folder, then use the File...Open command to locate the file and open it.

May I correct the terms here :   

You can open it in Turbotax 2021 and edit it, or you can use it to start a new 2022 tax return by importing transfering certain data.  If you have both Turbotax 2021 and Turbotax 2022 installed on your computer, double-clicking the file will probably try to open the 2022 program to import transfer  your data.
