The IRS will start processing returns onJ an 23 Until then TurboTax will hold your pending e-filed return. Pending returns can not be changed. If your return is accepted you will get an email. If the return is rejected the e-mail will tell you what to correct and you can make changes before e-filing again. Amend to change an accepted return after you get your refund. If you want to make changes, or add a document to a tax return that has already been submitted you should follow these guidelines.

  • You must first wait until the initial return is completely processed.
  • You will have to use the same TurboTax account that you used for the original tax return.
  • Once you begin your amendment, you'll see your original return.
    • The refund calculator will start new at $0 and only reflect the changes in the refund or tax due
    • Only make changes to the areas of your return that need amending.
  • You have three years from the date you filed your return or two years after you paid the tax due (whichever is later) to file an amendment

Select your product below and follow the instructions.

Yes, you have to wait until accepted and paid.

  • If you are owed a refund, you must wait until you receive your refund. Click HERE for instructions on how to amend.
  • The IRS won't start accepting returns until January 23, and then usually you must wait a few weeks to get a refund, then amend. If your return is rejected you may input changes immediately, and clear up the reason it was rejected, for example, missing information, wrong AGI, among others.

Lastly, you can't cancel a pending return in TurboTax once transmitted or in the process of being transmitted, only once it is rejected, or accepted and you have received your refund, can you amend.

Did you click that big orange button that said “Transmit my return now?”  If you did that, you cannot do anything to fix it yet.  You have to wait for the email that tells you if your return was accepted or rejected.

You cannot change or add anything on the return that you just e-filed, nor can you stop it.  It is too late, just like when you put an envelope in a US mailbox on the corner.  The IRS does not allow you to take it back.

If you left out a W-2, a 1099G, or a dependent, or a 1099 etc…DO NOT change your return while it is “pending.”  The changes will go nowhere.

Now you have to wait until the IRS either rejects or accepts your return.  If your return is rejected, you will be able to go into your account and make the necessary changes to your tax return and re-submit your return.

If the IRS accepts your return, however, then you have to wait longer until it has been fully processed and you have received your refund.  THEN you can prepare an amended tax return and e-file or mail  it in. You have to be able to work from that return exactly the way it was when it was e-filed originally.  You will need to use a form called a 1040X.

Meanwhile, DO NOT go in and start changing anything on your return in the system, or you will make a mess for yourself.  Sit tight and wait until you see what the IRS does with the return you just e-filed
