Claimed my daughter when it was my time to do so. Need to fix it.

I have completed my 2018 taxes and have received my return. My ex wife notified me to point out that I had claimed my daughter when it isn't my time to do so. My ex is trying to get her taxes completed. What do I need to do to correct the issue?

Thanks

Amend your return and remove the dependent.   You will probably owe additional tax.   Once a SSN has been claimed in the IRS e-file database no other e-file can use the same SSN this tax year.  Your ex will have to paper file and mail claiming what she is entitled to claim.

Amended return take up to 4 months to process.

Amended returns can only be mailed. It is suggested that it be mailed certified with return receipt (or other tracking service) to verify that the IRS receives it.

See this TurboTax FAQ for detailed amend instructions:

You can check the status of the amended return here, but allow 3 weeks after mailing.

If you were not supposed to claim the child then you will need to file an amended return.  But in the meantime, your ex cannot e-file.  She will have to print, sign and mail her return that claims the child.

A 1040X cannot be e-filed.  It must be printed and mailed.  It will take about 3-4 months for the IRS to process an amended return.  It is a good idea to use a mailing service that will track it, like UPS or certified mail, so you will know it was received.

Wait about 3 weeks from mailing and you can check the status of your amended return:

You will have to amend your tax return and remove your daughter as a dependent.  You will have to pay back part of your tax refund based on claiming her as a dependent.

An amended return can only be printed and mailed, it cannot be e-filed.  The IRS will take up to 4 months to process the amended tax return.
