Amended return sent for 2021 taxes before receiving refund

As soon as I saw my mistake on my 2021 return I completed an amended return. This was in February. I still have not heard one word about my refund. How can I check on the status of my return?

Oh dear.   You should have waited for the IRS to process that original return before you panicked and filed an amended return. The IRS catches some mistakes and corrects them for you without the need for you to amend.   

How did you file the amended return ---did you mail it----or wait until the Form 1040X could be e-filed?   Putting two tax returns into the system can delay things and cause confusion.   And....it is taking the IRS months to process amended returns.

Only the IRS can give you any information.

For the original return:

First, check your e-file status to see if your return was accepted:

Once your federal return has been accepted by the IRS, only the IRS has any control.  TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS. Your ONLY source of information about your refund now is the IRS.

You need your filing status, your Social Security number and the exact amount  (line 35a of your 2021 Form 1040) of your federal refund to track your Federal refund:

If you chose to have your TurboTax fees deducted from your federal refund, that will take some extra time, while the third party bank handles the refund processing.

OR——if you filed by mail, expect a long wait.   It is taking the very backlogged IRS six to nine months to process mailed returns.   Until a human opens your envelope and enters the data into the system, nothing will even show up on the refund site, so you will have to be very patient.

For the amended return:

Even during “normal” times it takes about four months for the IRS to process an amended return.  During the pandemic and due to the severe backlog at the IRS it is taking much longer—six months or more for many amended returns.  Do not expect quick results from amending.  When the IRS issues a refund for an amended return it will be by check.  They do not make direct deposits for refunds for amended returns.  You can watch for information here:

IRS says: 

processing time for 1040-X is the same for paper or e-File.

You should see the receipt of your amended return on the IRS amended return status page.
