You will need to file an amended (1040X) return to add your 1099 to your return.  However, you won't be able to amend your tax return until the IRS releases the 1040-X Amendment form for 2019. The IRS estimate for issuing the 1040X form is February 14, 2019.

Additionally, make sure that your 2019 return was accepted in TurboTax Online or paper-filed through the mail.

To prepare an amended return through TurboTax, follow these steps:

  1. Sign in to TurboTax.
  2. Scroll down to Your tax return & documents (you may need to select Show), select 2019 and then Amend (change) return.
  3. Select Amend using TurboTax Online.
  4. Carefully follow the instructions. Don't worry if your refund changes to $0. This is normal on amended returns.
  5. When finished, we'll give you instructions for printing and mailing your amended return as amendments can't be e-filed.

Three weeks after mailing your amended return, you can start tracking it at the IRS Where's My Amended Return? tracking tool.  Please allow at least 16 weeks for the IRS to process your amended return.

Processing times for amended state returns vary from state to state. If it's been more than 12 weeks since you mailed your amended state return, and you haven't heard anything, we suggest you contact your state tax agency.

additional 1099 after filing

I was not at all satisfied with this transaction. The agent seemed to know nothing about how the program works. I actually asked, since I had printed the return for mailing, if it could be reopened. She couldn't answer my question. After waiting for her to come up with some kind of answer, I gave up and decided to mail the return, and then file an amended return. It was better than wasting an hour on the phone.

Sorry you didn't get a proper answer in time.  Did you ask here in the forum?    You could have just Clicked on Add a State to let you back into your return.  Then change or add anything.

@cooderbrown You added to a thread from January.  We cannot see your return and do not really understand what problem you had.  But it does sound like you mailed your original tax return.  We could have told you how to re-open it to make corrections to it before you mailed it.  (You click on Add a State and that lets you back in to fix or change things before you file).

But you say you then amended and sent an amended return.  You should never send in an amended return (a Form 1040X) until the original return has been fully processed.  Sending them at the same (or almost the same) time is a recipe for confusion and delays in processing your return and in getting your refund.  Mailed returns are already taking a very long time to be processed.  The IRS is working on opening over 11 million pieces of mail that piled up in trailers during the pandemic.  If you have an original return and an amended return in those piles you can expect it to take a very long time before you receive your tax refund.  All you can do is wait and watch the IRS refund site to see when your envelope makes it to processing.

TurboTax does not receive any updates from the IRS.  Your ONLY source of information regarding your refund is the IRS.

hopefully, the original return was processed before you filed the amended return. if not, this can further delay the processing of your return.   nothing to worry about if you are not due a refund.  but if you are and file the amended too soon there can be an extremely long delay before you get it.
